I’m sure you have seen the guy at the gym whose neck looks like a mountain composed of nothing else but muscle. What are those muscle mountains protruding from above his collarbones? Those are his ‘traps’ or trapezius muscle and as you can tell they are one of the top “mirror muscles”. A huge set of traps intimidates those around you, that is just the way it is. But while they might be great for looks they play a bigger role than simply being “mirror’ muscles”. Possessing a set of well-developed traps will go a long way in helping you be a better competitor regardless of the sport you play. Not to mention the huge role they play in injury prevention. A strong set of traps absorb contact to the shoulder area more effectively, secure the neck area during contact, and reduce the risk of neck injuries and even concussions. Yeah, I am sure you now feel a sense of urgency to start training your traps and a good starting point would be with the 2 movements Jeff Cavaliere of ATHLEAN-X breaks down in the video below. They might not be the traditional shrug movement you are accustomed to but give them a chance and you surely won’t regret it!
