This might come off as a surprise to you but the glutes are the biggest and strongest muscle in the body; consisting of three different muscles: gluteus minimus, medius and maximus. These three muscles work together to abduct, rotate and extend the hip.
Strengthening your glutes will go a long way in improving your posture and making simple movements such as sitting down, standing, picking up heavy objects and going up stairs easier. As well as improve athletic performance while decreasing your chances of injury. Strong glutes are essential for any athlete due to the fact that they are responsible for accelerating, decelerating, switching directions and creative explosive power for jumps. But developing strong glutes is not only key for optimal performance but also for injury prevention. A pair of weak glutes can cause a major imbalance at the hip that can potentially lead to knee problems among other injuries.
How should you go about strengthening up your glutes? By training them at least once time a week using a routine compiled of mostly compound, multi-joint exercises, such as squats, lunges, deadlifts and step-ups.
