A woman weightlifter who lost an arm in a car crash can now lift more than before her accident. Krystal Cantu, from Texas, had to have her left arm amputated last year after the car she was travelling in with her boyfriend flipped over. But the determined 25-year-old sought solace in her hobby of weightlifting and says the accident “was the best thing that could have happened to me.” Cantu can lift 210 lbs clean above her head with one arm, more than she could when she had two arms. She admits she thinks about the accident every day. “I had people trying to help me and I was trying not to look at my arm but I could see it in the reflection of one guy’s sunglasses.

“When I arrived at the hospital, the surgeon came up to me and said that he had looked at everything and the arm needed to come off.” Despite that, she was in the gym within three weeks. Her coach, Chris Xanders, said she is an inspiration and Krystal wants to compete professionally in CrossFit, a sport which combines weightlifting, gymnastics and cardio. Her boyfriend Daniel Cuate emerged unscathed from the crash, which happened after a tire blew, causing the car to flip over, in August 2013.
