The shoulder just like the tricep is composed of three heads: the anterior, lateral and the posterior with all three heads coming together and insert laterally at the deltoid tuberosity. The anterior deltoid is primarily used to abduct the shoulder when the arm is externally rotated. The lateral deltoids primary job is to abduct the shoulder when the arm is internally rotated while the posterior deltoid is mainly used to extend the arm at the shoulder. Making it key to hit all three heads when training shoulders.
